THE sun will be shining, in reality and metaphorically, on a number of venues and people this weekend, both in Ireland and abroad.

In the racing world there is a piece of wood on the Epsom Downs that will show which of 16 bluebloods has become the latest winner of the Derby, a race that has, since its inception in 1780, had the most influence on the thoroughbred breed. Seven Irish-trained runners will compete, including a battalion from Ballydoyle.
