THE two-day Tattersalls February Sale will take place in Newmarket next Thursday and Friday, February 1st and 2nd.

There are over 350 horses in the sale, including broodmares, fillies and horses in/out of training, yearlings and two-year-olds.

The catalogue features high class consignments from leading owner-breeders including Godolphin, Juddmonte and Shadwell.

Trainers selling stock include Andrew Balding, Karl Burke, John and Thady Gosden, William Haggas, Richard Hannon, Sir Michael Stoute and Roger Varian.

The sale will also feature the popular TBA Flat Stallion Parade before the start of Thursday’s trade.

Although the February Sale is typically seen as a sale for breeding stock (Khor Sheed, dam of last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Without A Fight was purchased for 28,000gns here last year) there have been some notable horses-in-training purchases at recent editions.

Missed The Cut was a 40,000gns purchase here in 2022 before going to win a handicap at Royal Ascot and a Grade 3 race at Santa Anita.

Last year Brentford Hope was picked up at this sale for 90,000gns and he has since won three times over hurdles and is no better than 10/1 for the valuable Betfair Hurdle at Newbury next month.

Last year’s leading consignors Barton Sales will offer a draft of 13 lots including the well-bred broodmares Angel Terrace, a Grade 3-winning half-sister to European champion stayer Order Of St George, who will be offered in foal to New Bay, and Crimson Rock, a half-sister to European champion filly Peeping Fawn and granddaughter of the exceptional broodmare Blush With Pride who will be offered in foal to Saxon Warrior.

Other highlights among the broodmares catalogued include the Shadwell-consigned Taqaareed, a Sea The Stars own-sister to European champion Taghrooda who will be offered in foal to Pinatubo.

Other sisters to Group 1 winners include Norris Bloodstock’s Choumicha, an own-sister to the 2000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold offered in foal to Ardad and the Houghton Bloodstock-consigned Royal Event, a half-sister to the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner and 2000 Guineas runner-up King Of Change.

The catalogue includes mares in foal to proven Group 1 sires Ardad, Churchill, Cracksman, Harry Angel, New Bay, Saxon Warrior, Showcasing, Territories and Too Darn Hot, as well as young Group 1 winners Blackbeard, Pinatubo, Stradivarius and Supremacy.

Fillies from the consignments of leading owner/breeders are always eagerly sought after and Shadwell will offer six well-bred fillies in and out of training led by the 86-rated Tarjamah, a daughter of Dubawi out of an own-sister to the Oaks runner-up Tarfasha.

The Godolphin draft of 10 lots includes Queen Of Fairies, an 85-rated daughter of Cracksman out of a Group 3 winning half-sister to European champion Teofilo, as well as smartly-bred daughters of Shamardal, Invincible Spirit and Wootton Bassett. Other eyecatchers among the fillies include the listed winner Moracana, consigned in training by Sheila Lavery’s Chinook Stables, and Lady Bullet, twice listed place for Alice Haynes Racing.

Largest draft

The Castlebridge Consignment will offer the largest draft in the catalogue with a team of 51 including the four-year-old Galileo colt Covent Garden, third in last year’s Group 1 Irish Derby and an own-brother to the Group 1 winner Johannes Vermeer.

He will be joined by several smart lightly-raced horses in training, including the last-time-out winners Smoky Mountain and Composite, rated 94 and 92p by Timeform respectively, as well as the progressive three-year-old Alfred, rated 85 by Timeform.

Other unexposed prospects include the Baroda Stud-consigned Sea The Stars four-year-old Inspiritus, who earned a Timeform rating of 90 for an impressive victory recently and will be offered on behalf of Roger Varian’s Carlburg Stables.

Juddmonte will offer a select draft of four well-bred colts and geldings led by the promising three-year-old Frankel colt Retort, a grandson of the blue hen Hasili and an own-brother to the Group 2 winner Obligate, who boasts a Timeform rating of 87.

Other eyecatchers among the colts and geldings with proven form include the Jamie Railton-consigned and Timeform 110-rated Max Mayhem, placed in the Listed Prix Arcangues on his most recent start, and a high class duo from Charlie Fellowes’ Bedford House Stables in Clearpoint and Way To Dubai, Timeform-rated 100 and 101 respectively.

The promising three-year-old Billy Webster was added to the sale this week and will be offered as Lot 275A by trainer George Scott’s Eve Lodge Stables

The winner of three of his four lifetime starts, the three-year-old received a Timeform rating of 97 for a dominant win on his most recent start on January 6th. The son of Profitable cruised to the lead over five furlongs at Southwell and has now won all three of his starts over the minimum trip, including on debut at Pontefract in April last year.
