Much is likely to be written this week about the progeny of Blue Bresil and a son of the Glenview Stud stallion topped the opening session of the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale on Sunday.

Sunday's trade saw a clearance rate of 65%, with 139 of the 214 foals offered finding buyers. This compares with 73% on this day last year. Sunday's median price of €9,000 was down 22% on the same session last year and the average price of €11,694 was back 15%.

The session-topper was consigned by James Sheehan’s Clonmult Farm on behalf of Richard and Mai Nolan of Old Court Stud and was bought by Timmy Hillman for €68,000. The colt is out of the unraced Shirocco mare Bee Yanka and hails from the family of high class Nicky Henderson runners Rajdhani Express and Gold Present.

“Donal White, who advises us, suggested we send Bee Yanka to Blue Bresil and she has visited the sire three times now,” Richard and Mai Nolan said afterwards.

“The stock she has produced are so magnificent, we just kept going back and she is an amazing breeder of foals. She is now in foal to Night Wish, she is an incredible mare,” they added.

These thoughts were echoed by consignor James Sheehan who said: “He has been a lovely horse to deal with, he was always going to be a stand out today which is why we chose to go through the ring today.”

Flat pedigree

The early pace was set another son of Constitution Hill’s sire Blue Bresil who was bought by Kieran Shields for €67,000. Offered by Mark Furlong’s Thistletown Stud the colt is the third produce out of the four-time winning blacktype performer Rolanna and has a predominantly flat pedigree, being a great grandson of American stakes winner Desert Radiance.

“He is a good walker and by the right sire, he is a good size and he has been bought as a pinhooking prospect,” said the buyer’s daughter Kate Shields.

Vendor Mark Furlong was delighted with the sale of the colt and said: “He is a cracking individual. We had all the right men for him and he made a good price. We’d have been disappointed he had not made €50,000. We bought the mare Rolanna here for €10,000, and she has had two fillies who have sold okay, and this is her big payday. She won four races and she has that bit of listed placed blacktype, too.

"She has a lovely temperament and this colt has that as well. She’s also a fine big mare and is back in foal to Blue Bresil, due in February.”

Latest Exhibition sibling

One of the best bred foals offered on Sunday was a Walk In The Park colt out of Aura About You who was a Grade 3 winner over fences. having been Grade 1 placed as a hurdler for trainer Paul Nolan and owner Jim Mernagh. She has since bred the ill-fated but top class Latest Exhibition who won a Grade 1 novice hurdle among five wins.

Sunday’s offering from Mernagh’s Coolamurry Stud was knocked down to JC Bloodstock for €60,000.

"Aura About You was a very good racemare and ran third behind Quevega in the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham,” Mernagh said. “She bred a good one in Latest Exhibition and I sent her to Walk In The Park as he is just a legend of a sire,” he added. Given the buyer, Michael Fitzpatrick of Kilminfoyle House Stud, this foal is likely to return to a store sale in a few years time.

Lot 155 is destined for a similar route, yet another Blue Bresil who was bought by Kevin and Anna Ross on behalf of Chris Jones. Out of a half-sister to high class chaser Castlegrace Paddy, the Walshstown Stables-offered colt cost €50,000.

Anna Ross said: “He is a big, loose-moving sort and the sire can do no wrong at the moment. He has been bought as a re-sale prospect and, for us, was the best by the sire here today.”

Lot 44 could well be in line for a quick update after being knocked down to Caoimhe Doherty, signing as CMD Bloodstock, for €32,000. The Vadamos colt from Kells Lodge Stud is a half-brother to Troytown Chase winner Run Wild Fred who was given a positive mention for the same race at Navan this coming weekend by his trainer Gordon Elliott.

In addition to the high-class Gigginstown owned Run Wild Fred the colt’s dam Talkin Madam has also produced the useful Gavin Cromwell-trained mare Derrylinda.

The sale continues on Monday.
