WATERFORD trainer John Flavin secured the biggest win of his career when Street Value ran out a dour winner of the Porterstown Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse last month, and he is hoping the nine-year-old can set himself up for a big second half of the season today at Cork.

The Miracle Cure Syndicate-owned gelding drops down a whole nine furlongs in trip but returns to the course and distance of his first win over fences when he takes on five in the EasyFix Handicap Chase (3.07).

“He won well the last day and we’re looking forward to get him started again,” said Flavin. “I’d say the trip might be a bit short but he loves the ground, so we said we’d kick on with him in case it changes in the future. He has plenty of weight but hopefully he has a bit of class that might see him through.”

A win today would likely ensure the son of Well Chosen could get a run in the Thyestes Chase later this month, while a return to Fairyhouse for the Irish Grand National is also on the cards.

“He takes his racing really well,” said Flavin. “He looks after himself fierce well. If you watch him during the Porterstown, he actually pricked his ears turning in, and Danny (Mullins) got to sit up on him and got to fill him up, so that’s actually why I’m giving him a run here because hopefully if he got into the Thyestes it would leave him spot on.

“He’s a very big, gross horse, he needs plenty of work to keep him on the ball.”
