PAT Smullen will miss the ride on Zawraq in next Sunday’s Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial after failing to have the severity of a two-day careless riding ban reduced on appeal yesterday. Smullen picked up the ban at Limerick on April 25th and it rules him out of action next weekend.

A best-priced 8/1 for the Epsom Derby, Zawraq is owned by Derrinstown sponsor Hamdan Al Maktoum who retains Paul Hanagan as his first jockey in Britain. The Leopardstown race clashes with the French 1000 and 2000 Guineas meeting at Longchamp, where Sheikh Hamdan is also likely to have runners.
