MICHAEL O’Hagan has always been an innovator and word reaches us that the Newmarket-based bloodstock agent is supporting an initiative which saw some unique ‘trophies’ presented at Newmarket yesterday (Friday).

As advisor to racehorse owner, race sponsor and equestrian supplies businessman Malih Al Basti, Michael is often tasked with sourcing suitable prizes for major races sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld, such as yesterday’s Group 2 Rockfel Stakes and Group 2 Joel Stakes.

Instead of picking up the usual bit of crystal or a silver picture frame, yesterday’s winning connections received a three-metre tall tree of their choice from a range on display at the track. The idea was fostered by Malih’s passion for trees and for Newmarket. The sponsor said: “As a racehorse owner for many years I appreciate the significance of race trophies. With Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai sponsored races we try to be innovative and to source locally. This initiative offers us the opportunity to fulfil both these ambitions.”

To mark the occasion a new tree was planted by Malih in the pre-parade ring on the Rowley Mile and it should be in full bloom for next year’s Guineas Festival.

In a further nod to environmental issues, yesterday’s Newmarket racecards featured a cover made from seed paper. The bio-degradable racecard cover, when removed and planted, will release its seeds to create a wildflower bloom.

Some very progressive thinking there, and we expect to see Michael in full hippy gear at the sales next week.
