MARTINA Dempsey was a brilliant winner of the Corinthian Challenge Charity Race in aid of Irish Injured Jockey (IIJ) at the Curragh racecourse on Sunday.

Riding Fair Damsel trained by Richard Brabazon, Martina stole the race in the closing stages as she delivered a perfectly timed finish to beat long-time leader Noble Anthem and Damien Moore.

Martina who grew up near to the Curragh had lots of family and friends there cheering her home. Involved with horses from a young age, her first job was with trainer Frank Ennis and since then she has gained much experience working with many other trainers at home and in Australia.

In October 2021, she joined the Godolphin Flying Start team as Ireland Coordinator. Prior to that she served as an Equine Lecturer at the College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE) and Kildalton College.

She has pursued a fine career in education within the Irish thoroughbred industry. Martina has a Masters Degree in Applied Equine Science (UCD) and a Degree in Equine Management (CAFRE). She has also completed a Mental Health First Aid course which is accredited by Mental Health First Aid Ireland.

Amazing

Speaking after the race Martina commented: “Ah, it just felt amazing, I’m just so happy! I was really excited about today so, I’m just so happy especially for the mare and for Dick (Brabazon) and to have all my family and friends here it’s just brilliant and it’s extra special so close to home!”

At the Curragh on Sunday, 11 riders went to post for the second leg of the challenge. Damien Moore, Niamh Ashe and Michael O’Neill finished second, third and fourth respectively.

With one race to go, the overall series title is still within grasp of a couple of the challengers. The current leaderboard stands with Monasterevin man Damien Moore on 17 points, Michael O’Neill from Kilkenny and Martina Dempsey from Kildare each on 10 points. Kildare ladies Niamh Ashe and Katy Brown are both on five points and Newry native Aimee Murphy on three points.

Michael Higgins, IIJ General Manager said: “This is our major annual fundraising event and we are so grateful to all who take part each year. It is a serious commitment and the funds they raise are vital to our charity and all that we do here at Irish Injured Jockeys.

“I am delighted for Martina who rode a brilliant race and well done to everyone who took part, roll on Leopardstown!”

The final race of the series will take place at Leopardstown on October 21st.
