JIM Derwin confined himself to a single purchase at the premier sale of three-year-olds in Cavan on Tuesday and was just slightly more active the following day when signing for three lots who, too, were all three-year-old Irish Sport Horses.

Derwin’s purchases included the top-priced Lot 196, a Tyson gelding consigned by his Co Sligo breeder, Tony Carrabine. The bay, who made €16,500, is the second recorded progeny out of the Balou du Rouet mare Sligo Grannus Lady. She did a small bit of jumping herself but is a full-sister to Sligo Hard Times who competed on five-star Nations’ Cup teams for Spain.

A bid of €10,000 from Derwin secured another Co Sligo-consigned gelding, Seamus Cawley’s unnamed Lot 213. Bred by Stephen Howley, this bay by Sligo Candy Boy is out of the traditionally bred Dunbeggan Coevers Girl who is by Dunbeggan Coevers Hill out of a Master Imp mare from the family of Dunbeggin Imp (CCI3*).

Minutes earlier, the hammer came down when Derwin offered €9,300 for Philomena II (Lot 211), a filly by the Cornet Obolensky stallion Phil VD Wezelse Heihoeve. Consigned by her Co Mayo breeder Sean Judge, the grey is out of the Dutch-bred Tres Bien who jumped up to 1.35m Grand Prix level under Showjumping Ireland rules.

Irish purchasers signed for seven of the nine five-figure lots with Aoife Cassidy giving €13,500 for Madeline Duggan’s Aughlin Mr Van (Lot 231).
