NINETEEN-year-old Bertram Allen chalked up yet another honour for Ireland on Friday when he outclassed a 55-strong international field to win this evening’s feature speed class at the five-star show in Madrid.

The Wexford teenager, ranked 10th in the world, piloted Quainton Stud’s 11-year-old gelding Quiet Easy 4 to an early lead and despite the best efforts of a world class field romped home with a comfortable three second lead over Swiss challenger Pius Schwizer, who was riding Cameron Hanley’s former mount Newton du Haut Bois.

Allen collected just over €8,000 for his win, while the 52 year-old Swiss veteran earned €5,000 for his runner-up place.

World number three, Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum, settled for third place against the Irish teenager, trailing behind by almost six seconds on the grey mare Chiara.

Allen, who finished third in the World Cup Finals last month after a string of international individual victories, is joined at Madrid by Offaly’s Darragh Kenny.

The Spanish Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix takes place in the Spanish capital this afternoon (Saturday) at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
