THREE-time Burghley four-star winner Avebury has been retired by owners Mark and Rosemary Barlow and rider Andrew Nicholson.

The 16-year-old grey British sport horse by Jumbo was one of the most successful event horses ever, winning his three Burghley titles consecutively in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and also winning the three-star at Barbury Castle four times in 2012-2015.

Owner Rosemary Barlow told HorseTalk.co.nz that old age had caught up with him.

“This is a day we were all dreading. He has served us so well and after his last gallop he wasn’t showing his normal exuberance and zest for life. Sadly old age has begun to catch up with him, and he deserves a well-earned rest,” Rosemary Barlow said. “Avebury is a horse of a lifetime and owes us nothing.”
