IT took a few days to happen, but Mark Johnston finally passed Richard Hannon senior’s all-time record for British winners when 20/1 shot Poet’s Society and Frankie Dettori made all in the Clipper Logistics Handicap over a mile.

There could not possibly have been a more typical result. Whereas many trainers would have set the winner aside for this after a fine second under Dettori in the big mile handicap at Goodwood, Johnston managed to fit in two more races – at Ascot and Chelmsford, sixth and fifth – between times. Poet’s Society has run 10 times since the start of July, yet here he was, making all and denying the well-supported Kynren by a neck, with 2016 winner Firmament right behind.
