CURRENTLY based in Busan, South Korea, Northern-born jockey Fergus Sweeney has been in Singapore since Monday preparing for his ride in tomorrow’s Korea Racing Authority Trophy over 1,200 metres at Kranji on the US-bred Gakbyeolhan, a five-year-old grey by Big Brown out of the Black Tie Affair mare Awful Smart.

“The horse is trained in Korea by Kim Young Kwan but, since I arrived here, I’ve managed to pick up three other rides on Sunday’s card for a local trainer (Kuah Cheng Tee),” reported Holywood-born Sweeney, who has ridden 11 winners from just 58 rides since moving to Busan in May. Although the 40-year-old has spent most of his career in Britain, he has also ridden in Ireland, Switzerland, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Barbados and India. He will soon be off to pastures new.
