HAVING written about him in this column only recently, it was great to see Downpatrick-born Danny McMenamin win one of the early season marquee British handicap hurdles at Cheltenham last Sunday on the 20/1 shot Nietzsche.

On just his third ride at Prestbury Park, the 7lb-claimer landed the extended two-mile Grade 3 Unibet Greatwood Handicap Hurdle by a hard-fought neck from Adam Wedge with the staying-on Silver Streak. This was Danny’s second ride for winning trainer Brian Ellison, the first coming over the same course and distance two days earlier when they combined to finished 13th of 20 with Snookered who had eight hurdles to jump while, due to the low-lying sun, Nietzsche only had to tackle five on Sunday.
