VIDEO: Torpillo takes next step up the ladder at Sandown
on 05 January 2019
The rising star was a runaway winner in the juvenile hurdle and the unbeaten four-year-old could be a leading Triumph Hurdle contender

TORPILLO advanced his JCB Triumph Hurdle claims in maintaining his unbeaten record with a facile success in the Unibet Juvenile Hurdle at Sandown.

After a successful British debut at the Esher track last month, the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained four-year-old had little problem in following that up, crossing the line 22 lengths clear of Fukuto, who passed Paddy The Chef for second on the climb to the line.

The Simon Munir- and Isaac Souede-owned gelding was left unchanged at 14/1 for the JCB Triumph Hurdle by Paddy Power.

Twiston-Davies said of the 30/100 winner: “We don’t know what he has beaten with the second-favourite going at the first, but that eased our problem.

“In that ground he is a bit like Bristol De Mai in that he has a high cruising speed that puts them to the sword. He has got lots of pace. That was very nice and he has done it well.

"Just walking in with Anthony (Bromley, owners’ racing manager) we were thinking about Grand National Trial day at Haydock (Victor Ludorum). It should be soft ground again, so that should be ideal.”
