IRISH Derby winner Latrobe narrowly failed to give trainer Joseph O'Brien another major success when beaten a head in the Group 1 Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington early this morning.

The three-year-old was beaten a head by the Jarrod McLean-trained 25/1 shot Trap For Fools – a second top-level winner for late Dalham Hall Stud stallion Poet's Voice – with last week's Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby hero Extra Brut another head back in third.

The trio finished one and three-quarter lengths clear of the fourth, Prized Icon. The Charlie Appleby-trained favourite, Blair House, was only seventh.

Four horses represented Ireland in the previous race, the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic over six furlongs, but sixth place was their best result.

Spirit Of Valor took that spot, two and three-quarter lengths behind the winner, Santa Ana Lane. Intelligence Cross, U S Navy Flag and Fleet Review filled three of the last four placings in the 14-runner contest.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Jungle Cat, who is about to join the stallion team at Kildangan Stud, fared better as he dead-headed for third place.
