Following the success at the Breeders' Cup on Friday for Mendelssohn, the Aidan O’Brien-trained U S Navy Flag was expected to put up a bold show in Saturday's Juvenile on dirt.

From his number one draw, Ryan Moore’s mount tried to make all the running but faded from the home turn.

The race was won impressively by the Jose Ortiz-ridden Good Magic, who had finished second on his two previous lifetime starts but was rated highly by trainer Chad Brown. A son of Curlin, Good Magic is sure to be ante-post favourite for the 2018 Kentucky Derby.

Hot favourite Bolt D’Oro had a nightmare trip from his outside draw before finishing third.

O'Brien said of US Navy Flag, who also won the Middle Park Stakes this season: "As you can see he's a fast horse and is going to be a sprinter next year."

Brown said of the winner, a $1 million purchase: "It was a tremendous ride from Jose and I'm so proud of this horse. He's always been a very talented horse and it all came together today.

"The reward was greater than the risk to run. We took a shot and it worked."

There was an Irish winner on the Breeders’ Cup supporting card when Declarationofpeace benfited from a superb Ryan Moore ride to win the Juvenile Turf Sprint, a new race which has listed status.

The Godolphin runner Sound And Silence looked sure to win the five-furlong contest when hitting the front in the closing stages under William Buick but, in a finish reminiscent of the 2013 Turf when Magician caught The Fugue on the line, Declarationofpeace scythed through the pack and got his nose in front in the final stride.

There was a minor upset in the Juvenile Fillies as Caledonia Road edged out Alluring Star. The 17/1 winner is trained by Ralph Nicks and was ridden by Mike Smith.

A much bigger shock came in the Filly & Mare Sprint when Bar Of Gold came out on top at 60/1. Irad Ortiz rode this John Kimmel-trained winner.
