Verrazano retired: Dual Grade 1 winner Verrazano has been retired from racing and will stand at Ashford Stud in Kentucky next season. The four-year-old son of More Than Ready was one of American’s top classic colts last year when trained by Todd Pletcher. Moved to Aidan O’Brien this year, Verrazano was placed in both the Lockinge and Queen Anne Stakes but was found to be lame when unplaced in the Eclipse Stakes last month. O’Brien said: “It is not a significant injury but time would not permit us to have him ready for the Breeders’ Cup, so the decision has been made to retire him.”

Chicago card: The four Grade 1 races at Arlington Park tonight will be shown live on At The Races. There are 12 European runners engaged on the Chicago card, including four from Aidan O’Brien’s yard. Joseph O’Brien rides Magician in the Arlington Million, while Ryan Moore takes over on the stable’s Adelaide in the Secretariat Stakes and Eye of The Storm in the American St Leger. A preview of the races appears on page B30 and the card is on B38.
