THE art of venery is not given to many but Ger had it in spades. We in Duhallow spotted this teenager, never without a terrier or two, who would regularly run 20 miles on a Sunday with the Liscarrol Harriers. Born within earshot of kennels, he didn’t have far to go to help out Michael Buckley, then Duhallow huntsman.

On leaving school, Ger joined the Duhallow as kennel huntsman and over 20 years later, he was still there until his tragic accident. His first role was as kennel huntsman but this soon expanded to being whipper-in. Obviously he had a lot to learn but his skills quickly grew every day he was out with hounds.
