A 12-year-old boy was tragically killed earlier today when the pony and trap he was travelling on was involved in a collision with a truck in the capital.

The fatal accident occurred on St Cuthberts Rd, Clondalkin, Dublin this afternoon (Friday) at around 1.40pm. It's understood that the child was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed to Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.

The two other boys that were also travelling on the pony and trap were uninjured and did not require hospital treatment.

A full garda forsenic examination of the scene is underway at present. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are attending and the road is closed to traffic.

The accident happened in Grange View Grove in Clondalkin, an estate less than three kilometres from the Liffey Valley shopping centre near the junction of Grangeview Road and St Cuthberts Road near the well-known Swallows pub in Deansrath.

It's understood at this early stage that the pony and trap collided with a large truck that was parked on the road at the time.
