GUY Cherel, one of France’s leading jumps trainers, has been arrested on suspicion of possessing unlicensed medicines. Based in Maisons-Laffitte, the 58-year-old Cherel has had 55 winners so far this year.
In 2016 he was suspended for three months by France Galop for a doping offence involving Ranitine, a gastric ulcer treatment. Sources close to the yard say that inspectors found unauthorised painkillers on a recent inspection of the trainer’s premises.
Paris-Turf reports that a pharmacist has also been arrested and both he and Cherel could be brought before a judge on Wednesday.
Cherel has trained a long list of graded race winners in France. His best horses include Homme Du Jour, River Charm, Rendons Grace, Pistolet Rouge, Usual Suspects, Irish Saint, Blue Dragon and Dica De Thaix.
On the flat he trained Al Namix and Califet to win stakes races before they went on to become National Hunt stallions.
