THERE is a huge amount to get the teeth stuck into from the past week, with top action in Ireland, Britain and France, to name but some of it, but the obvious place to start is with the two St Legers, at Doncaster and the Curragh.

It has become something of an accepted truth that stayers are unpopular these days, but no-one has bothered to tell the horses. The long-distance division has been in rude health of late, and, in the week when one of the best stayers for many a year – Order of St George – was retired, we got one of the best St Leger winners of the modern era in Kew Gardens as a possible replacement.
