He was hemmed in on all sides down on the rail from well before halfway and got bumped back in when he tried to escape the trap turning in. His jockey Ryan Moore got pretty desperate in the closing stages and switched him to the rail where he tried to squirrel his way through a non-existent gap on the inside of eventual third place Gallante.

Finally, with just a furlong left, Gallante started to tire and drift slightly from the rail. This allowed Moore to force Adelaide through. It was too late because Free Port Lux had already been able to build up a good head of steam in the sprint finish down the wide outside and swept through to the front.
