IT’S been one helluva season to celebrate the red horse. The Derby and Kentucky Derby went to two chesnuts in Masar and Justify; among the fillies, Monomoy Girl is the dominant one in America with a host of Grade 1s to her name while Sea Of Class took the Irish Oaks and looks a filly of further potential. With Justify retired, the mantle of top three-year-old in the US seems to have been passed to Good Magic, another chesnut. If that wasn’t enough, this week at Goodwood the top stayer Stradivarius stamped himself a stayer of the highest order. And the best result of the week was the gloriously chesnut Lightning Spear getting his Group 1 win in the Sussex Stakes.

Forget that old ‘four white feet do without him rhyme’ – get the cheque book out and buy a red one this autumn. (And finding one like Rashaan would be something to be proud of too.)
