1980 Coronation Stakes – Cairn Rouge

How many trainers have saddled a winner of a championship race at both Cheltenham and Royal Ascot? Ascot may gather the elite in flat racing but every now and then a trainer more known in the winter game hits the jackpot. So it was when the Michael Cunningham-trained filly Cairn Rouge, already proving her talent in winning the Irish Guineas, took on the English Guineas winner Quick As Lightning in the Coronation Stakes. With Tony Murray on board, she battled her way through in the final furlong for a memorable win.
