THE Gurkha, a dual Group 1 winner of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) and Sussex Stakes, will stand at Coolmore in 2017, it has been announced.

The Galileo colt won three of his six career starts and also counts second places in both the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on his record.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, The Gurkha had subsequent Prix Jacques Le Marois winner Ribchester back in third when claiming the Sussex at Goodwood on what was to be his final start.

The Gurkha subsequently required colic surgery in early August, but is reported to have recovered well.

"He's a very good-looking and good-moving horse, bred on a similar cross to Frankel, out of a group-winning two-year-old from the family of an excellent sire in Green Dancer and he's Europe's Champion Three-Year-Old Miler elect," said Coolmore's David O'Loughlin. "What more could you want?"
