I had a couple of good friends join me on day three of Cheltenham last year for their first-ever visit.
They really enjoyed reading the racecards and they placed small bets on each race using their own system for choosing horses, with limited success.
After race three they were very keen to place a bet for me on the Stayers’ Hurdle and, confidently, I said, “Flooring Porter to win”.
Well, of course, Danny Mullins gave the horse a brilliant ride and the horse did the honours for me. The atmosphere in the parade ring after the race with the syndicate members was unbelievable.
It is not memorable for the sums involved but more the fact that my friends had a new-found respect for my ability to select a winner! A real mic drop moment for me!
