DURBAN July winner Legislate, who heads for Newmarket in February, returned in sensational style to smash the Kenilworth mile record in the Green Point Stakes last Saturday. Justin Snaith was so confident that he would shrug aside a 20-week absence that his father Chris vowed to jump off the roof of the stands if the colt didn’t win. Neither the horse nor Snaith senior had a moment’s worry and Richard Fourie headed for home over a furlong out to win by three and a half lengths in a time of 1 min 35.84secs to beat a record that had stood for 19 years. “He needed this – he was blowing quite a bit coming back – but he has improved so much since last season,” said Fourie. “He is by far the best horse I have ever ridden.” The four-year-old’s two remaining races in South Africa will be the mile Queen’s Plate on January 10th and the J & B Met over two furlongs further three weeks later.
