NEW Bay’s fee for 2023 has doubled to €75,000, and there is every reason to believe that it will climb further. Last season was a breakthrough one for the Ballylinch stallion, and he is joined at stud for this year by his son Bayside Boy, a Ballylinch homebred.

The title of best son of New Bay will be fiercely contested. Bay Bridge, from his first crop, stays in training and is the winner of six of his 10 starts, with earnings of more than €1.275 million. He beat Adayar, My Prospero, Baaeed and more to end last year with victory in the Group 1 Qipco Champion Stakes. Bayside Boy, who was reviewed last week, is from the second crop by New Bay.

That first crop also includes New Bay’s first Group 1-winning daughter, six-time winner Saffron Beach.

The Group 1 tally could have been more, but New Energy had to settle for the runner-up spot in last spring’s Group 1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, while other stars on the track for New Bay have been Group 2 winners Jumby and New Mandate. Last year New Bay’s yearlings sold for up to 475,000gns.

Just like Ballylinch’s flag-flying sire Lope De Vega, New Bay won the Group 1 French Derby, the Prix du Jockey Club, in which the high-class son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) defeated Highland Reel.

Trained by André Fabre, New Bay was the champion three-year-old in France after his third in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe to Golden Horn, and he was also a group winner at Deauville as a four-year-old.

Second in his only race at two, New Bay made a winning reappearance over a mile at Longchamp. Stepping up to Group 1 company in a field of 18 for the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains-French 2000 Guineas, New Bay finished fast but could not quite catch Make Believe, with Highland Reel over two lengths behind him.

The form was confirmed in the classic Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club at Chantilly, with New Bay quickening well to defeat Highland Reel by a length and a half in a very fast time. New Bay went on to add the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville in August and the Group 2 Prix Niel at Longchamp by two and a half lengths.

French champion

In the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe he was a close third to Golden Horn and Flintshire, beaten only a neck for second place, and next behind him was Group 1 star Treve, winner of the race in the two previous years. New Bay was named the champion three-year-old in France over 10 furlongs, rated 128 by Timeform.

At four New Bay won the Group 3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville and was fourth to Almanzor in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, again ahead of Highland Reel, before running a close seventh in the Arc de Triomphe won by Found, with Harzand behind him.

Among the best sons of Dubawi, sire of 52 Group/Grade 1 winners, New Bay is out of Cinnamon Bay (Zamindar), a listed winner and dam of four winners. She is a half-sister to Bellamy Cay (Kris), who won the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil, while their dam is a half-sister to Hope (Dancing Brave), the dam of Oasis Dream (Green Desert) and grandam of Kingman (Invincible Spirit).
