SCAT Daddy (by Johannesburg) won the Grade 2 Sanford Stakes over six furlongs, was runner-up in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes over seven and landed the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes over a mile – all at two. He then added the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes and Grade 1 Florida Derby – both over nine furlongs at Gulfstream Park – before what turned out to be his final start, an unplaced run behind Street Sense in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby.

The Ashford Stud recruit represented a branch of Storm Cat’s (by Storm Bird) powerful line, he shuttled to Chile, and just as he appeared set for super-stardom as a sire, he was gone. His fee, which had dropped to $10,000 at one point, was set to be $100,000 for a second consecutive year in 2016, but he died before that season began, aged 11.
