THE times of the majority of the other big races during the week were similarly compromised by early pace.

Big Orange rallied to win a falsely-run Goodwood Cup with a timefigure of just 75, while Shalaa’s time suffered from the opposite impact of a slightly too strong early pace (or that’s what the sectionals imply) in the Richmond Stakes. The latter ran just a 102, compared to a 115 when he won the July Stakes at Newmarket, but that was still the fastest by a two-year-old during Goodwood, and he deserves the plaudits that are coming his way.
