THERE was no Calyx at Newmarket but the form of the Coventry Stakes that he won was represented with distinction by the Royal Ascot runner-up Advertise, who won the July Stakes with authority by two lengths from Konchek.

Advertise’s timefigure comes out at 112, one below what Calyx achieved on sectionals on his debut, and I, for one, think there might be precious little between the pair if they were to meet again. While Calyx had to race on his own in the closing stages at Royal Ascot, Advertise (and Sergei Prokofiev) ended up further back than ideal. Konchek ran to 105 at Newmarket, while behind him Charming Kid and Dunkerron ran personal bests also, of 104 and 101.
