Horseracing analysis and successful betting is much concerned with the correct trading off between old and new information, a process known in statistics as Bayesian updating.

It is wrong to hold onto your old beliefs – known as “priors” in the Bayesian world – in the face of all evidence to the contrary. But it is also wrong to lurch from one extreme viewpoint to another every time a new piece of information comes in.
