ANYONE who stayed up for the British coverage of the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico late on Saturday night will have seen Justify win the second leg of the US Triple Crown to add to his success in the first, the Kentucky Derby.

When I write “seen”, that is perhaps a bit of poetic licence, for most of the nine and a half furlong race was shrouded in fog. Fortunately, US racing has sectionals, and has indeed had them for well over a century, so piecing together what happened is feasible.
