FAREWELL to Winx, the phenomenal Australian race mare who united a country but divided opinion further afield. Saturday saw her swansong at Randwick in Sydney, where her adoring fans got to see her win her 37th race and 33rd in a row in the Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

She had a couple of high-class horses in Happy Clapper and Hartnell, as well as the former British-trained He’s Eminent (known as Eminent when winning last year’s Craven Stakes), up against her. But none of them ran to their very best, which was a good thing where Winx was concerned as her length-and-a-half defeat of the unconsidered Kluger was one of her less impressive victories.
