WHILE Ireland’s sport horse sales season of 2015 will go down in history as one of record-breaking returns, it was also one of solid growth. Capturing the attention of the equestrian world, the sale of the eminent show jumper Dougie Douglas (ISH) for €1.4 million was the obvious highlight of the year, but positively the sales figures in general illustrated a consistent improvement throughout.

The strength of overseas currencies against the euro was undoubtedly an influential factor, but improved production levels and intelligent breeding strategies were similarly significant. The currency advantage also eased the feared and substantial hike in the VAT rates, which despite early concerns, appeared seamlessly absorbed.
