Date: Wednesday, May 18th

Performance Sale: 11am. 140 lots approx.

Last year’s top lot (April): Jackie Conlon’s Loreto Quality, 7 year-old gelding by OBOS Quality (dam by Larino) €18,000.

AS the sport horse sales gather pace, Cavan is due to host its third dispersal of the year next Wednesday. The new date is the result of a slightly juggled calendar this spring, and replaces the usual April fixture.

In line with recent strong trading trends, the one date renewal has attracted a good catalogue of around 150 mixed lots.

The older stock look especially weighty, to include several competition horses with form as well as a draft of proven hunters. As always, the ponies appear attractive, and if the sale topper emerges from this sector, it will not be for the first time.

Looking through the list of sires, several stallions have two lots forward, but standing out with four is Padraig Howley’s enduringly popular Sligo Candy Boy.

Ponies

Lot 5 Bonnie, reg 7 yo pd m 128cms. One for the smallest of jockeys is Bonnie, who is fully guarateed in every way. Described as ‘every mother’s dream’ she performs well in all disciplines. Lot 8 Rossies Delight, reg 6 yo dn m 138cms. This potentially top class pony is one of the catalogue stand outs. Carrying a super show jumping record, she has clocked up 40 SJI points in classes up to 1.10m and appears to have a bright future ahead of her.

Lot 10 Banjo R, reg 9 yo bl g 127cms by Black Diamond out of Melissa (Kadett). Another from the smallest of the height groups Banjo R was bred in Germany and has competed on the continent. In addition, this straightforward pony has competed sucessfully in both ridden show and working hunter classes, as well as combined training and cross country. Thought an ideal prospect for the under eight/10 classes.
