THE flat season goes up a gear or two next week when Newmarket stages the Craven meeting from Tuesday to Thursday.

Complimenting the classic trials and competitive maidens is the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, which takes place in nearby Park Paddocks after racing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

There are 163 juveniles catalogued for the sale which last year alone produced unbeaten European champion two-year-old Native Trail, winner of the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and Group 1 National Stakes, and two further Group 2 winning two-year-olds in Asymmetric and Go Bears Go.

All 163 lots are eligible for the £250,000 Tattersalls Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus, won in its inaugural year by Native Trail.

The scheme offers a £125,000 bonus for the first Craven Breeze-Up winner of any of the six two-year-old races at the Royal meeting and an additional £125,000 bonus to the first Craven Breeze-Up winner of any of the 15 European Group 1 races open to two-year-olds.

This is in addition to the £15,000 Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Bonus which has rewarded the owners of horses bought from the Craven Breeze-Up Sale with nearly £500,000 in bonus prize money since its inception in 2019.

Top pedigrees

The catalogue features own or half-brothers and -sisters to 27 group race or listed race winners, including the Mehmas half-sister to last year’s Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner Ebro River and the No Nay Never half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner Harlem.

Amongst the well-related colts are the Lope De Vega half-brother to Irish 1000 Guineas winner Just The Judge, the Sioux Nation half-brother to 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Twilight Gleaming, the Zoffany half-brother to Group 2 winner and Grade 1 placed Lemista, and the Adaay half-brother to the luckless multiple Group 1 placed sprinter Dragon Symbol.

In addition there are a further 24 two-year-olds out of group or listed winning mares catalogued including fillies by Showcasing and War Front out of the Group/Grade 1 winning mares Penelopa and Dancing Rags.

Also amongst the highlights are the four two-year-olds by outstanding sire Kingman. The Kingman filly is out of the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes winner and 1000 Guineas placed Daban.

The dams of the three Kingman colts are Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed Fate, Group 3 winner One Last Dance, and Earring, a Group 2-placed daughter of dual Guineas runner-up Together.

The catalogue also features the Lope De Vega colt out of the listed performer Hibiscus, an own-sister to the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty, and the Oasis Dream colt out of a full-sister to the champion older sprinter Mecca’s Angel.

A filly by Zoustar was added to the catalogue this week. She will be consigned as Lot 89A by Aguiar Bloodstock.

Leading stallions

No less than 46 of the sires represented in the catalogue have already produced classic or Group 1 winners. They include Acclamation, Australia, Camelot, Dark Angel, Exceed And Excel, Fastnet Rock, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Kodiac, Lope De Vega, Mehmas, New Bay, Night Of Thunder, No Nay Never, Oasis Dream, Sea The Moon, Sea The Stars, Shamardal, Showcasing, Siyouni, Starspangledbanner, Zoffany and Zoustar.

Promising young stallions Ardad, Cotai Glory, Galileo Gold and Profitable also have two-year-olds catalogued.

They are joined by a strong contingent of USA-based stallions including proven Grade 1 sires American Pharoah, Distorted Humor, Honor Code, Kitten’s Joy, Medaglia D’Oro, Nyquist, Speightstown and War Front.

Two exciting American first-season sires with representatives are champion two-year-old Good Magic and Preakness winner Cloud Computing.

Other first-crop stallions with progeny on offer in this sale include Cracksman, Expert Eye, Harry Angel, Havana Grey, James Garfield, Kessaar, Saxon Warrior, Sioux Nation, Smooth Daddy and Tasleet.

Consignors

Robson Aguiar’s Aguiar Bloodstock, which sold Group 2 Railway Stakes winner Go Bears Go at last year’s Craven Breeze-Up Sale, has the largest consignment with 12 juveniles catalogued and last year’s sale-topping consignor Tally-Ho Stud will offer a total of nine, alongside Willie Browne’s Mocklershill and John Cullinan and Roger Marley’s Church Farm & Horse Park Stud.

Norman Williamson’s Oak Tree Farm, which sold Native Trail here last year, has four colts catalogued.

Bonus schemes

In addition to all lots being eligible for both the £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus and the £15,000 Craven Breeze-Up Bonus, buyers looking to benefit from additional incentives will be well catered for with eight lots entered in the £100,000 Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes, three lots entered in the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes and six in the €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes.

There are also 11 two-year-olds eligible for French owners’ premiums, six fillies registered for the Great British Bonus Scheme and one lot entered in the hugely popular £20,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus.

Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said: “The sale has been strongly supported by Europe’s leading breeze-up consignors and the combination of an outstanding catalogue and unrivalled bonuses makes the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up a compelling prospect for both domestic and overseas buyers.”

The breeze will take place on the Rowley Mile Racecourse on Monday starting at 9.30am.
