NEWS that week that St Mark’s Basilica has run his last race put Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale back in the news.

The five-time Group 1 winner and champion colt was bought for 1.3 million guineas at the Book 1 sale and there are 502 yearlings in this year’s Book 1, which runs from next Tuesday to Thursday.

Billed as Europe’s premier yearling sale, Book 1 is arguably the world’s top yearling sale for those searching for top turf performers. The current flat season has been a great advertisement for the sale as, along with St Mark’ Basilica, other graduates to have starred include top miler Palace Pier, three-time Group 1 winner Hurricane Lane and leading US turf horse Domestic Spending.

Book 1 is not normally regarded as a sale which produces leading two-year-olds but, following St Mark’s Basilica, it might well throw up a second consecutive champion juvenile in the shape of Native Trail.

Remarkably, Native Trail was bought for just 67,000gns at Book 1 last year. The son of Oasis Dream was sold by Kildaragh Stud (agent) to Mags O’Toole and Norman Williamson as a yearling, and Williamson’s Oak Tree Stud re-sold the recent Group 1 winner for 210,000gns at this year’s Craven Breeze-Up Sale.

Native Trail

Native Trail is one of four individual group race-winning two-year-olds to have come out of last year’s sale who cost less than 100,000gns. Like all Book 1 graduates, they also earned the £20,000 Book 1 bonus from Tattersalls when they won their maiden. Over £6 million in bonuses has been paid out since 2016.

As you would expect, this year’s catalogue is quality from start to finish. Remarkably, the top 10 stallions in Britain and Ireland are responsible for just over half of the lots catalogued. The stallions are Frankel, Galileo, Dark Angel, Sea The Stars, Dubawi, Kingman, Kodiac, Lope De Vega, Australia and No Nay Never.

There are 20 yearlings by Dubawi, 24 by Frankel, 43 by Kingman, 44 by Lope De Vega, 34 by Sea The Stars and 14 by the late Galileo.

In addition, the catalogue features own or half-brothers and sisters to a remarkable 47 classic and Group 1 winners and 248 group race or listed winners.

Amongst the siblings to classic and/or Group 1 winners are own or half-brothers to Advertise, Aunt Pearl, Battaash, Blue Point, Ghaiyyath, Palace Pier, Pretty Gorgeous, Snow Lantern, Sovereign and Subjectivist.

The catalogue also features own or half-sisters to classic and/or Group 1 winners Aclaim, Beauty Parlour, Bolshoi Ballet, Broome, Cursory Glance, Golden Horde, Line Of Duty, Shalaa and Waldgeist, plus the recent Group 1-placed juvenile Group 2 winner Point Lonsdale.

An impressive 21 Group 1-winning mares have yearlings catalogued including classic winners Nightime and Sky Lantern, both of whom have produced Group 1 winners and both of whom have colts by Kingman.

Two further classic winners in Attraction and Miss France have yearlings catalogued by Dubawi and Galileo respectively. Outstanding racemares Persuasive, The Fugue and Vorda will be represented by colts by Frankel, Shamardal and Siyouni respectively.

Among the 14 yearlings by Galileo are an own sister to Grade 1 winner Line Of Duty and half-brothers to the Group 1 winners Toormore, Glorious Forever and Time Warp.

Dubawi, sire of the Book 1 sale toppers in 2018 and 2019, has an eye-catching collection of 20 yearlings including half-siblings to multiple the Group 1 winners Waldgeist and Rizeena, and the first foal out of Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Urban Fox.

Juddmonte Farm’s remarkable young stallions Frankel and Kingman have 67 yearlings catalogued between them with Frankel represented by own or half-brothers to Group/Grade 1 winners Blue Point, Without Parole and Tamarkuz and colts out Group/Grade 1 winners Cursory Glance, Persuasive and Sophie P.

Kingman boasts an equally impressive line-up with siblings to classic and/or Group 1 winners Aclaim, Maarek and Snow Lantern, and yearlings out of Group 1 winner Speedy Boarding and the aforementioned Nightime and Sky Lantern.

First season

Devotees of first-season sires will be spoilt for choice with 12 represented including classic and/or Group 1 winners Cracksman, Expert Eye, Harry Angel, Roaring Lion, Saxon Warrior, Sioux Nation, U S Navy Flag, and American stallions City Of Light, Good Magic, Justify and Mendelssohn.

Leading French-based sires Le Havre and Siyouni feature prominently alongside proven USA-based sires American Pharoah, Candy Ride and Speightstown. Further international interest is added by the champion Australian sire Zoustar who is represented by his first crop of northern hemisphere-bred yearlings.

The largest draft comes from last year’s sale-topping consignor Newsells Park Stud which will offer an outstanding team of 30 yearlings, followed by The Castlebridge Consignment with 29 and Highclere Stud with 23 lots catalogued.
