2:30 JERSEY STAKES

This may not be a vintage renewal but it does provide a good insight to classic form lines with Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French Guineas) runner-up Le Brivido at the top of the market followed closely by 2000 Guineas fifth Dream Castle and 1000 Guineas third Daban.

Le Brivido brings in the best form, considering his Deauville conqueror Brametot went on to score in the Prix du Jockey Club on his next start. The rattling fast ground at Ascot might be a slight concern for Andre Fabre’s colt but the return to seven furlongs will be fine and he looks the one to beat. Dream Castle, to be ridden by Josephine Gordon, should also appreciated coming down in trip and he is a big player. However one at a bigger price to consider is the Ger Lyons-trained Glastonbury Song. The Meath trainer has always had this race in mind for the son of Casamento and you can excuse his previous run in the Irish Guineas, as the ground was too soft for him.

SELECTION: LE BRIVIDO NEXT BEST: GLASTONBURY SONG

3:05 QUEEN MARY STAKES

Happy Like A Fool warrants obvious respect in the race her trainer Wesley Ward unleashed Lady Aurelia in last year. However there has to be a slight concern about her ability to handle turf, as she is a daughter of Distorted Humour out of a Sky Mesa mare - two horses primarily known for their exploits on dirt.

Elsewhere this contest looks weak and a tentative vote is given to probable second favourite Heartache. Trained by Clive Cox, she impressed many by the way she won at Bath where she also clocked a decent time on debut. The second vote goes to Formidable Kitt, whose dam Ceiling Kitty won this race in 2012. Trained by Tom Dascombe, she showed plenty of speed and then a good attitude late on to win on debut at Newmarket.

SELECTION: HEARTACHE NEXT BEST: FORMIDABLE KITT

3:40 DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES

The ex-South African-trained Smart Call, now in the hands of Sir Michael Stoute, is an interesting contender, with Ryan Moore booked to ride. The five-year-old mare is the highest rated horse in this race, having won three Grade 1 races in South Africa for previous trainer Alec Laird. She ran fine on her British debut, when third in a tactically-run affair won by Blond Me at York and she should come on for that effort now.

Turret Rocks (near) impressed when she beat Laganore (far) at the Curragh

Qemah returns to the scene of her Coronation Stakes triumph last season and she warrants obvious respect, as does impressive Epsom winner Laugh Aloud who is likely to start favourite. However, at a huge price, it is worth considering the Jim Bolger-trained Turret Rocks. She hated the soft ground on her previous run behind Creggs Pipes at the Curragh but she will get her preferred surface now. Bolger has always thought a lot of the daughter of Fastnet Rock, who impressed on her penultimate run when she beat Laganore in the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes, and it would be no surprise to see her run a big race.

SELECTION: SMART CALL NEXT BEST: TURRET ROCKS

4:20 PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES

Highland Reel is a rock-solid performer and showed as much on his latest run, winning the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom despite nightmare logistical problems getting to the track. However, his most recent five runs have been over 12 furlongs and, though he has won at the top level over 10 furlongs, it probably isn’t his optimum distance. You could make the same point for Jack Hobbs, but he has performed really well in two Qipco Champion Stakes races at this trip, and he is taken to confirm form with Aidan O’Brien’s runner, who he beat in the Dubai Sheema Classic on his previous run.

Highland Reel didn’t run his race there, but Jack Hobbs was very impressive in any case and, with a clean bill of health, he may well be able to deliver on his potential now. The fast ground will be fine for him and he should be primed and ready. Decorated Knight is something of an underrated horse but is now a two-time Group 1 winner and he delivered a career-best on his previous run when winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh. He can put up another big performance.

SELECTION: JACK HOBBS NEXT BEST: DECORATED KNIGHT

5:00 ROYAL HUNT CUP

This traditional cavalry charge is typically wide open and, with 30 horses spread across the track, jockeys will need plenty of luck in running. The suggestion is to go with a horse well used to this type of fare and Bossy Guest looks a decent option. Mick Channon’s five-year-old finished sixth in this race last season and was only beaten three lengths on soft ground which may not have been ideal. He arrives here off the back of two solid runs already this season and races off a 1lb lower handicap rating than last year. He should perform with credit again.

GM Hopkins gets the second vote. John Gosden’s gelding won this race off just a 2lb lower mark two seasons ago and his record over the straight mile at Ascot is very good. He reared up at the start on his seasonal debut here on his previous run so that effort can be excused and he should be able to give a much better account now.

SELECTION: BOSSY GUEST NEXT BEST: GM HOPKINS

Tisbutadream has won at Ascot before

5:35 SANDRINGHAM HANDICAP

Tisbutadream is interesting, not least because she was bought for £400,000 at the Goffs London Sale on Monday. David Elsworth’s filly has been seriously progressive, coming from winning a lowly Lingfield handicap off a mark of 67 to finishing third on her latest run in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes behind Laugh Aloud, favourite for the Duke of Cambridge earlier on this card. She also has a win over this course and distance and should at the very least be competitive here again.

It’s an open-looking race and the Cheveley Park-owned pair Gymnaste (trained by John Gosden) and On Her Toes (William Haggas) are respected as two unexposed and improving fillies. However a chance is taken on Present Tense, for whom John Gosden has booked Pat Smullen. She will have to improve on her most recent effort at Leicester, but she is an unexposed filly, having had just three runs to date and she is also a half sister to Kingman, so could well have more to offer.

SELECTION: TISBUTADREAM NEXT BEST: PRESENT TENSE
