Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2)

JESSICA Harrington’s Magical Lagoon (Shane Foley) showed her battling qualities when just touched off in the Salsabil Stakes at Navan in April, and again looked all heart when rallying to beat favourite Sea Silk Road (William Haggas/Tom Marquand) in a thrilling renewal of the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes.

The 11/4 chance took over when runaway leader Mystic Wells weakened two furlongs out but looked cooked when Sea Silk Road went past with a furlong to go.

Foley regathered his mount, however, and coaxed a renewed effort out of the daughter of Galileo to get back to front at the distance, and she outbattled the runner-up in most likeable fashion. The pair came two and three-quarter lengths clear of the staying-on History (Aidan O’Brien/Ryan Moore) in third.

The winner will likely head to the Irish Oaks next, and while she will face a tougher task in Group 1 company, she has clearly progressed for the step up to one and a half miles, and seems to relish fast ground, which makes her dangerous to discount.

The winning trainer said: “Magical Lagoon won a Group 3 as a maiden last year, and she battled in that. I always knew that if she got into a battle, she’d be really tough. She loves that quick ground – she really enjoys it.”
