The Co Clare native, who is based in West Sussex, became stranded in his 4x4 when the flooded and tidal river Arun suddenly burst its bank onto the A272 on which he was travelling near Wisborough Green. The water disabled, flooded and subsequently drifted his jeep. Fortunately, Rory managed to ring the emergency services and get the driver’s window down before his signal booster and the vehicle’s electrics failed in the early morning darkness. He was extracted to safety, through the driver’s window, shortly after dawn by members of the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services.

After a quick change of clothing and vehicle, none the worse for the ordeal, he continued on as the veterinary surgeon on call over the Christmas period.
