THE third Eventing Ireland national championships held at Tattersalls in early September were considered the best to date and, although there were some notable absentees among the professional riders, the inclusion of Irish Sport Horse Studbook classes in the weekend’s programme ensured that most were present.

For the amateur and younger riders, the championships were the highlight of their season and many will have been disappointed that nerves spoiled their performances. This was particularly true in the second show jumping arena where, under far closer scrutiny than usual, those competing in the non-graded championships kept the arena party very busy.
