THE Breeders’ Cup was run this weekend 10 years ago and from a European perspective it was moderately successful. The Turf, where European runners filled the first four places, and the Filly and Mare Turf were the races of particular interest, though the great Ouija Board was beaten in the latter.

This was the 22nd running of the Breeders’ Cup series and the fourth time the event was held at Belmont Park. It was generally a night of upsets, with only two of the eight races being won by the favourite.
