LAST autumn, all nine mares owned by Cushinstown, Co Wexford breeder Simon McCarthy were scanned in foal with seven of them producing live foals during the spring and early summer.
One of these is the traditionally bred Cushinstown Diamond (by the Irish Draught stallion Diamond Rock out of an unraced thoroughbred mare by Orchestra) whose Pointilliste three-year-old, a flashy chesnut gelding, was knocked down for €20,000 to British event rider Lucinda Mesquita at the recent Monart Sale to which he was consigned by Co Clare’s Tom Casey.
Simon is a longtime supporter of Slyguff Stud going back to 1968, when he first sent mares to be covered by King Of Diamonds, and a full-sister to the Monart graduate is being advertised for sale in the classified column in this week’s paper (See pages 118-119). The breeder is also advertising a Pointilliste filly out of the traditionally bred Carrick Diamond Lad mare Cushinstown Carrick and a Masters Choice filly out of the traditionally bred Arctic Cushinstown Cosmos (by Arctic Cosmos).
Among other foals bred by McCarthy this year was a Dignified van’t Zorgvliet filly out of the traditionally bred Master Imp mare Cushinstown Glory (dam previously of the show jumper Master Ballinteskin) who was sold at Goresbridge. He also bred a filly foal from the second crop of Cornetini out of the Cavalier Royale mare Cavalier Cushinstown Cruis and a colt bred along the same lines being by another son of Cornet Obolensky, HHS Cornet, out of the Cavalier Royale mare Cushinstown Cavalier Royale.
Simon, who sells all his stock as foals, was delighted to learn that his nine mares have been scanned in foal again this year.
