THE North-West Region commenced its season at Big Isle near Letterkenny, Co Donegal last Sunday. It was a day to remember for Jack Kearney and Paddy Hanlon, both of whom rode their first winners.

Aged 15, Navan rider Jack Kearney opened his account in the second division of the 12-furlong race as he partnered Venom for Peter Mooney. With three furlongs to run the Paul Kavanagh ridden Mr James looked to have an unassailable lead but by the final furlong he was running on fumes and Jack, who rides out for Noel Meade and who hopes to get his apprentice licence over the summer, came through to lead inside the final 50 yards.
