WHO is Ireland’s number one fan of Triumph Hurdle favourite Lossiemouth?

We think it must be Berangere Madamet, a veterinary surgeon based at Ballybrown Equine Clinic in Clarina, Co Limerick.

As her name suggests, Berangere is French and her parents Cecile and Nicolas Madamet co-bred Lossiemouth at their Elevage des Vallons in north-west France.

The Madamets have bred graded winners in France before but Lossiemouth looks to be the best they have ever produced. The daughter of Great Pretender was co-bred by Ian and Susan Kellitt from Scotland, who are friends of the Madamets, and Lossiemouth is named after a Scottish village where Susan was raised.

The filly raced in the name of her breeders and trainer Yannick Fouin when she made a winning debut over hurdles at Auteuil in April. She was bought privately afterwards on behalf of owners Rich and Susannah Ricci.

When Berangere discovered the filly was going to make her Irish debut at Fairyhouse in a Grade 3 race last month she made sure she was there. Connections kindly allowed Berangere to be photographed with Lossiemouth in the winner’s enclosure.

Next came a Grade 2 win at Leopardstown over Christmas and now Lossiemouth is expected to run in the Grade 1 race for juveniles at the Dublin Racing Festival before going to Cheltenham.
