PARROT MOUTH: Kentucky Derby is Essential viewing for Rachel
on 30 April 2021
The Irish Field's Rachel Moriarty will be cheering Essential Quality the whole way home in today's Kentucky Derby

RACHEL Moriarty, who does such a great job editing the Horse Sense pages every week in The Irish Field, is very much looking forward to today’s Kentucky Derby and will be tuning in from her home in Co Louth as she cheers on the favourite, Godolphin’s Essential Quality.

“I worked at Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Kentucky for the 2018 breeding season and was lucky enough that Delightful Quality was one of the mares on my barn, so I looked after her and her Tapit colt, who we now know as Essential Quality,” Rachel said.

“Delightful is a lovely mare and very protective over her foals, so it is very fitting that the only picture I have of him she is standing over him and has him covered in hay!”

Progress

“It’s so lovely to follow the progress of the foals I looked after when I was over there and even better that one of them has progressed into such a star,” Rachel continued.

“I’m delighted for the whole team over at Jonabell. It’s so exciting for them to have a live chance at the Kentucky Derby, Godolphin have never bred a Kentucky Derby winner so it would be unbelievable if Essential Quality could do it for them today!”
