GERRY Dilger, the Co Clare-born horseman who died in Kentucky in 2020, lives on through the equine scholarship founded in his name and run by his family. This week the foundation staged a golfing event in Kentucky and Irish students will be among those to benefit from the funds raised.

The foundation recently supported three students on the Irish National Stud’s thoroughbred breeding programme including one from a non-college background. “Gerry himself did not graduate from college but he valued hard work,” the Dilger family explained, adding that the foundation would support an opportunity at the INS for an Irish non-college student every year.

An equine studies student at Enniskillen’s College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise will also receive an annual bursary from the foundation. “After doing some research, and some great comments from Joe Osborne about the success of the many CAFRE graduates he knew, we decided to offer the bursary,” the Dilgers said.
