THE Rooney family is again sponsoring the leading rider awards over the Galway seven-day summer racing festival. The jockey with the highest number of winners under National Hunt rules and under the rules of racing will receive a cheque for €2,000 each and a Galway Crystal trophy. The Pat Smullen perpetual memorial trophy will be presented to the leading flat jockey at the end of the week.
Paul Townend won the National Hunt Award last year, while Colin Keane secured the flat award and the Pat Smullen trophy.
In the event of a tie on the number of wins, the amount of prize money will come into play. The Rooney family has been associated with these awards for over 40 years.
THE annual League of Ireland Mascot Race took place at Naas last weekend in aid of Grow Ireland.
The mascots taking part in the race included; Stevie Capall (Kildare County), Billberry Goat (Waterford FC), Terry the Tiger (Galway United), Corky the Cheetah (Cork City), Harper the Dog (Finn Harps), Rocky the Seagull (Bray Wanderers), Leo the Lion (Limerick FC), Macul the Dog (Republic of Ireland team), and Frank the Tank (Paddy Power).
It was an inside job as the sponsors’ mascot Frank The Tank ran away with the race in “splendid isolation” winning by the length of the home straight.
