IN May 1989 I had just started working with Goffs when I accompanied Robert Griffin to see the yearlings at Pat O’Kelly’s Kilcarn Stud. It marked the start of Miss O’Kelly’s support of Goffs and her star yearling that year was a Last Tycoon colt out of Flame Of Tara, whose two-year-old sibling Salsabil was showing promise for John Dunlop. By the time of the sale, Salsabil had just won the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac and the colt was bought by Sheikh Hamdan for 440,000gns and named Marju. He won the St James Palace Stakes just two weeks after finishing runner-up to Generous in the Derby and sired numerous top class winners. He was one of many group winners sold by Kilcarn in the last 30 years and his death this week was a farewell to a horse whose sale had implications for Goffs that perhaps even outshone his many achievements on the racecourse.
